Yuri Vnodchenko was born in 1927 in the town of Kasharka in the Odessa region of Ukraine. He was orphaned at the age of 6, when his father died. In many of his artworks, he honors the commoners who helped to raise him. He was given art and music lessons as a young child. When Germany invaded Ukraine during World War II, he and other orphaned children moved to Teraspol in Moldova where he found a set of oil paints. He began copying paintings he saw in books and museums and was able to sell some of them. When the war ended, he was able to undertake formal art studies at the art college in Kishinev, the capital of Moldova. From there, he attended the Kiev Art Institute and graduated in 1956 and moved to Voronezh. Vnodchenko has been a member of the Artist’s union of the USSR since 1961. In 1971, he was awarded the extremely prestigious title of “Honored Artist of Russia”. He taught for many years at the Voronezh Art College. His early works were mostly figurative paintings, but later he became well-known for his landscapes, historical works, and paintings depicting hard-working commoners of his country. He has exhibited in numerous and important exhibitions and has received numerous awards and diplomas. His works may be found in the Ministry of Culture af the Russian Federation, the Artist’s Union of Russia, the Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts, the Kramskoi Museum in Voronezh, the Orel Regional Picture Gallery, and the Lipetsk Art Museum.
